Felicity – A Philosophical Fable [Chapter 23]

A ring of blue light hung in the air. Mimi had never seen anything like it.

Fae created more rings of blue with the small white rod she held in her hand. “I saw it at the Fair,” she said. “Would you like to try?”

Mimi nodded eagerly. Fae handed her the rod.

It appeared to be nothing more than a stick of wood, but when Mimi waved it in the air it left a line of blue light that lasted for a few seconds before fading. Mimi was delighted. Fae handed her a second rod. One that made lines of purple light.

Then Fae whirled two rods skillfully, leaving trails of red and orange light. Mimi imitated her movements. Soon the space between them was filled with abstract shapes and arabesque designs. Some were magnificent and some were mundane. But they all shone just as brightly and they all faded just as quickly.

Fae and Mimi frolicked in the shifting colors and patterns. They danced through the afterimages of their own creations.

Music played. “Dark Star.” Mimi heard it. Fae seemed to hear it too. They danced to the music.

Then Wave was with them. He was moving to the music. “Is this your music?” he asked Mimi. She nodded. “I like it,” he said. He gave a slight nod of his head. Mimi smiled with pleasure at the compliment.

She didn’t know where her music came from. It was just there. And until now she was never even sure anyone else heard it.

Fae handed Wave two rods and he joined their dance, adding green and yellow light to the ever-changing patterns. And the music played.
