Felicity – A Philosophical Fable [Chapter 3]

“We did it. I can hardly believe it. We have a Felicity.” Sunny spoke for all of them. Her voice was like the first flower of spring.

The capture of a Felicity was a rare event. And a gravely dangerous one. More people had been killed trying to capture one of the elusive creatures than ever benefited from having one. The household had been exceptionally fortunate. Not only did they succeed in capturing the Felicity, but not one life was lost.

Ryder advised caution. He was just as happy as the others, but his was the voice of reason. Although the situation looked promising, they had to be careful. They didn’t risk their lives to capture the Felicity only to let her get away. Yet they also didn’t want to alarm her by appearing to be sitting guard at her door.

It was finally decided that Fae and Tripp would be the first ones she would see when she emerged from her room. They had already spoken to her, and all had gone well, so she might feel more at ease with just the two of them. Ryder would remain out of sight on one side of the door and Sunny and Wave on the other. If need be, and Fae was certain there would be no need, the three could quickly step in.

The hours of waiting for Mimi to awaken did them all good. Their perilous adventure and the thrill of the capture had them all wound up. What they needed most if they wanted to appear casual around Mimi was to relax and occupy themselves with their usual activities.

Sunny devoted herself to her painting. It had been nearly finished when she had to rush out with the others to capture the Felicity before anyone else did. It amused her to recall how displeased she had been to have to stop when it was nearly finished, and now, now the Felicity was truly theirs. Wave watched her paint and strummed dreamily on his guitar.

Ryder returned to the mathematical conundrum he had been exploring. At first he was over-excited and couldn’t concentrate, but after a little while his mind settled down and he got back to what Fae liked to call his “equations and particles.”

Tripp was reciting his latest poem to Fae when Mimi came out of her room.

Dogwood trees in bloom,
Walking through the avenues –
Snow flowers in spring.

She joined them on their sofa and Fae insisted that Tripp recite his poem again for Mimi’s amusement. When he finished Fae clapped and so did Mimi.
