Felicity – A Philosophical Fable [Chapter 6]

Something was about to begin. Mimi was waiting for it. They all were. What were they waiting for? Mimi didn’t know. Though she knew they were all waiting eagerly.

Sunny and Tripp lounged side by side on a sofa, their fingers interlaced. Mimi sat across from them and Ryder sat on a floor cushion. Fae and Wave conferred excitedly out of earshot.

Then it began. The music rose gradually. It seemed to come from nowhere. It was Wave’s composition. Finally completed.

The drumbeat rose, a backbeat rhythm. Fae came forward, bathed in a rainbow of light. The bass, thick and heavy, shaped her movements.

Wave stood smiling, listening to his rhythm, basking in it, tapping his foot and bobbing his head in time.

But all eyes were on Fae. As she twirled and danced, the long full skirt of her white dress billowed around her. The points of its handkerchief hem rose and fell, now skimming her ankles, now fluttering gracefully.

On she danced, bejeweled in the colored lights. And the rhythm grew. Mimi felt it, felt the rhythm, first in her feet and then in her hips. She was dancing too. They all were.

Fae moved her arms, directing multicolored beams of light over all the dancers. The colors made dazzling patterns on Sunny’s white dress, on the white kurtas and trousers of the men, on the white and gray and beige furniture.

Then haze arose. It rippled around their feet, softening the colors, melting them, blending them into ever more subtle shades.

Mimi danced in the opal glow that ebbed and flowed with the rhythm. She danced blissfully. She danced for days. Or so it seemed. She didn’t know. She didn’t care. She was happy.
