Assumption

VII. Assumption

I dreamed I was floating
miles above the earth,
ascending actually,
rising like smoke,
gently, steadily,
in the halcyon sky.
There was no wind,
no cold, just the rising,
higher and higher.
It was peaceful.
A thought arose in
my mind. “There is
no air above the earth.
In space I shall suffocate.”
But it did not trouble me.
I knew that space was
a long way away and
it would be a long
time indeed before
I got there.
